When shopping for football gloves, there are several things to consider including type, brand, and design. However, the most important aspect to a football glove is how it fits on your hand. Even if you have the best glove on the market, if it doesn’t fit you right it won’t perform the way you want it to. So how do you determine what size football glove you should buy?

Find the perfect fit

Before choosing the good football gloves size you have to find the perfect fit for you when you wear the football gloves

When buying a football glove, the fit you should be looking for is snug, with no space after the tips of your fingers, but not too tight. Overly tight football gloves can restrict movement, or even cause fingers to go numb, making catches much harder. A good way to test if a glove is too tight is to try to make a fist with the glove on. If you’re unable to fully close your hand, it’s too small.

Alternatively, gloves that fit too loosely will slide around on your hands, causing numerous unwanted effects. For receivers, loose gloves will mean less grip and difficulty catching the ball, leading to more bobbles and drops. For linemen and defensive players, a loose football glove limits the protection they provide and could lead to finger or wrist injuries.

How to measure your hand?

Football gloves come in standard sizes, and some brands offer custom sizing. Although custom is always preferable, either way you go you’ll need to know your hand measurements. Glove sizes are divided into two categories, regular and youth. Start by measuring the length between the bottom of your palm and the tip of your middle finger. If your measurement is under 7 inches, you’re probably going to fit into a youth sized glove, which measure between 6.25 and 7 inches. Standard football gloves range from 7 to 8.5 inches and come in 6 to 7 different sizes: small, medium, large, XL, XXL, XXL, XXXL, and occasionally XXXXL. It’s also worth noting that if you have particularly wide or narrow fingers, you may want to go up or down a size if the measurements are close. Pro Tip: gloves may shrink in the wash, so if you’re choosing between two sizes, the larger one is the safer bet.

The difference a well-fitted glove can make can’t be overstated, it can truly revolutionize your game. Once you have the right type of gloves that fit perfectly, you’ll be ready to dominate on the field.
